The aim of the AJC is to provide programs and support services to the local Indigenous community with the aim of reducing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT criminal justice system.
The AJC provides and coordinates support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons in the ACT criminal justice system.
Legal advice can be obtained through Solicitors in the Aboriginal Legal Service - Canberra Office (02) 6249 8488 or the ACT Women’s Legal Service (02) 6257 4499 or 1800 634 669.
The AJC’s role is to provide and coordinate prevention and case management programs to support "at risk" and vulnerable persons.
The AJC will provide assistance, support and advocacy on a range of social issues or problems, but no legal advice is available.
The Aboriginal Justice Centre Inc was incorporated in November 2005 under the ACT Associations Incorporation Act 1991. The Aboriginal Justice Centre Board is comprised of members from the ACT Government’s appointed Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee (AJAC).
The role of the Aboriginal controlled Aboriginal Justice Centre Inc is to secure funds to design and deliver services that provide solutions to the issues impacting on the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and address their direct needs. The Aboriginal Justice Centre Inc provides a vehicle to bring the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community together to reduce over-representation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system. The objects of the Association are designed to achieve these aims.
The AJC Constitution provides the foundations of our organisation so we can build a stable, professional and outcomes-driven community based organisation that serves the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community in the ACT region.
The AJC is now seeking new members and invite all persons who have an interest in our objectives to apply using the attached membership application forms. We need people from all walks of life to help us make the AJC a strong, healthy and successful community based organisation that provides much needed services to the ACT Indigenous community. Information regarding membership and application forms are attached. Please read all documents before filling out an application form. Please telephone us to find out when our next general meeting will be held.
The following report of the outgoing 2006 AJC Board provides information on operational activities in 2006 and information on the organisations strategic direction. Further information on the AJC’s activities can also be found in the Case Management paper attached below.
