Early History.
My great great grandmother, Harriet Garbett Gough, was born in about 1845, in Bilston, Staffordshire. She was the illegitimate daughter of Amelia Garbett Willetts, but assumed the surname of Gough after her mother married Edward Gough (son of Edward and Sarah Gough) on 10 May 1847 at St Peter's Church, Wolverhampton. Edward Gough was born in about 1825 in Tipton, Staffordshire and was an iron moulder by trade.
It appears that Harriet did not assume the Gough surname immediately because her name is recorded as "Harriet Willets" in the 1851 Census for Bilston and she is described as Edward's "niece." However, by the 1861 Census, the family has moved to nearby Sedgeley and she is recorded as "Harrat Gough" and as Edward's daughter. By the time of her marriage in 1869, Harriet Garbett Gough was a servant living at Uffcott, Wiltshire, England.
My earlier hunch that my great great grandmother was the daughter of Edward Gough (and wife Ann) who was born circa 1815 in Goatacre, near Lineham, Wiltshire, has been proven to be incorrect.
The following map shows the places where my Gough, Willetts and Pitt family ancestors lived and worked, where they were baptised, married and buried.
