Early History.
My great great grandfather Richard Jones and his wife Deborah
(maiden name Hill) emigrated to Australia from County Wicklow,
Ireland, aboard the Joseph Soames in 1850, arriving in
Adelaide, South Australia. Their eldest son William George was
born on board ship and their eldest daughter Elizabeth Ann (my
great grandmother) was born in Adelaide in 1852. Sometime between
this event and the birth of their next child Thomas Charles in
1853, the family moved to North Melbourne, Victoria. By the time
of the birth of their daughter, Louisa Ann, in 1859, the family
had shifted to Brunswick, another suburb of Melbourne. In early
1877, Richard Jones selected 320 acres of land at Yalca near Nathalia.
Richard Jones died in 1885 at Yalca and is buried in the Numurkah
cemetery.
