Musical Works - Woo 14.
Words by: Claxson Bellamy
The streets of old London are crooked and dark,
The bye-ways and alleys would puzzle a clerk,
But though the young morn strives in vain to illume
A 'prentice lad gleefully strides through the gloom,
For love is his lantern, 'Twill guide him aright.
Hearts kindle in shadow as well as in light!
For 'prentice lads can toil and work,
And fight if needs be too,
But with what skill and rare good will
A 'prentice lad can woo!
For 'prentice lads can toil and work,
And fight, if needs be too,
But with what skill and rare good will,
A 'prentice lad can woo,
A 'prentice lad can woo!
A lattice is shining she's waiting he knows,
Up railings and balcony lightly he goes,
The casement flies back, and a damsel is seen,
If the 'prentice were King he would make her his Queen!
Too quickly the minutes seem madly to race
He leaves with a kiss and a parting embrace!
For 'prentice lads can toil and work,
And fight if needs be too,
But with what skill and rare good will
A 'prentice lad can woo!
For 'prentice lads can toil and work,
And fight, if needs be too,
But with what skill and rare good will,
A 'prentice lad can woo,
A 'prentice lad can woo!
Some night neath that lattice a steed will be found,
Some night a rope ladder will stretch to the ground,
Some night from her cage a fair maid will have flown,
When the 'prentice lad goes he will not be alone!
Then joyful and merry away will he ride,
The maiden will soon be a 'prentice lad's bride.
For 'prentice lads can toil and work,
And fight if needs be too,
But with what skill and rare good will
A 'prentice lad can woo!
For 'prentice lads can toil and work,
And fight if needs be too,
But with what skill and rare good will
A 'prentice lad can woo!
A 'prentice lad can woo!
