Introduction.
I am interested in the Marchant surname because it was the maiden name of my great great grandmother. My great great grandmother was born and lived all her life in Avebury, Wiltshire, England. Her father was born in Cherington, Gloucestershire, England. Accordingly, all of my research into the Marchant family to date has concentrated on Wiltshire and Gloucestershire respectively. Because the Marchant surname is relatively common, I have not yet undertaken any research into the surname beyond trying to trace my direct ancestors and their descendants.
Other surnames that are connected with the Marchant family are Pratt, Scaplehorn and Harewell. Zebulon Harewell senior was innkeeper at Trouble House Inn just outside Tetbury. His son, another Zebulon, was innkeeper there during the "Luddite Riots" of 1830, which damaged the inn by fire.
