My earliest Marchant ancestor which I have been able to identify with any certainty, was John Marchant or Merchant and the earliest written record I have of him is for his marriage to Frances Harewell on 8 May 1817 at Cherington, Gloucester, England. I have been unable to determine whether or not the Marchant family was originally a Gloucestershire family but the childen of John Marchant whom I have been able to trace all settled in Wiltshire. Two of John Merchant's sons, Job Marchant (Avebury) Zebulon Marchant (Marlborough) were master tailors.
