Introduction.

I am interested in the Pratt surname because that was the maiden name of my maternal grandmother's mother. My great grandmother was born in Avebury, Wiltshire, England, and emigrated with her husband and children to New South Wales, Australia in 1907.

To date my research has been confined to the descendants of Thomas Boulton Pratt, my great-great-great-great grandfather, who was a goldsmith, in eighteenth century London. His son (and my great-great-great grandfather) was Samuel Pratt, a Saddler and Harness Maker, who settled in Avebury, Wiltshire, in the early 1820s. For the remainder of the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth, the Pratt family (Samuel Pratt and his descendants) carried on the trade of Saddlers and Harness Makers in Avebury.

Other surnames that are connected with the Pratt family are SLOPER, PICKETT and SMITH. Linked family trees for these families are included on the Pratt Family Tree page

If you find this Introductory Guide of interest, please send me a message at alanthompson2526_at_iinet.net.au. I would be extremely pleased to hear from anyone with family news, information or suggestions about this Introductory Guide or who has any information about the trade of saddler and harness maker. If anyone is interested, I have lots of other information on the family, including a far more extensive family tree which I would be happy to share.
