How can you tell of Australian Federal Police (AFP) insignia you are buying (eg. on eBay) or trading are original?

I personally don't have an issue with buying reproductions as they form part of my collection, but I certainly don't want to pay top dollar for something which is listed as genuine and is in fact a FAKE!

Here are a few examples of original and reproduction AFP insignia;

(See also http://www.afp.gov.au/about-the-afp/customs-and-traditions/patch-and-rank-insignia.aspx )

  Original Reproduction
This is the standard AFP patch (Pre current Version).  These were issued in Black (For Tunics, jumpers etc.) and Blue (For shirts, caps etc.)

Note the shape of the Kangaroo and Emu heads, poor shape of the star, poor depiction of the Coat of Arms and incorrect size of the word 'POLICE'

This is the standard AFP iron-on patch.   These were issued on Summer Shirts (Short Sleeved) in the early to mid 80s.

Standard AFP Chaplain Patch.

Again note the shape of the Kangaroo and Emu heads, poor shape of the star, poor depiction of the Coat of Arms.

Original and rare AFP Wattle Patch.

As an interesting side note, this first proposal for an AFP shoulder patch was halted just prior to issuing because the Minister at the time thought that the proposal to include wattle on the patch made officers look like Texas Rangers.

The 'Police Protective Services' patch which was worn by members undertaking protective duties in the early 1980s. This patch was issued only to Protective Service Police at Government House in Canberra.

It was designed to be issued in conjunction with the floral design patch to identify General Duties Police from Protective Service Police, but was rejected by the joint AFP Associations. It was in service only for a very short time. This patch was phased out when the protective services component was separated to form the Australian Protective Services.

'Social Patches'

The following patches are patches which were never officially issued by the AFP.  Sometimes they are called 'Social Patches' as in some cases they are produced by teams or individuals as 'Team Patches'  or 'Social' activities - but in this case they appear to be mass produced patches based on the AFP design and produced for sale to collectors.
