Arrival in South Australia in 1853
Arriving at Port Adelaide on 19 Jan 1853, Thomas and Elizabeth would have been witnesses to the furore created by the news of the many deaths during the Shackamaxon’s voyage. Reports of the shortcomings of the ship’s doctor and the matron also circulated. These reports led to a government enquiry with due sanctions following.
All this probably passed over Thomas and Elizabeth who having been met by the local immigration agent, would probably have travelled by covered bullock dray through the “German” village of Klemzig to the emerging City of Adelaide. They would have then moved on south, again probably by bullock dray, to the comparatively established district of Willunga where Thomas is known to have worked for two years.
