Henry (Harry) Maple was the fourth child of Charles and Elizabeth Maple. He
too became a farmer. In 1896 he
married Ethel Pridham, the 2nd daughter of James and Rebecca
Pridham of Aldinga, at the Aldinga
Wesleyan Church in September 1896. Alice Emma Maple was a witness at
Harry’s wedding.
Harry
and Ethel may have met through kinship connections. Ethel’s aunt, Ann,
was married to James Treasure, a neighbour to Charles Maple, and from whom
Charles bought Parkfield and Hillside.
After
their marriage, Harry and Ethel lived at Hillside where their two sons, Garnet and Howard, were born.
Tragedy struck when Ethel injured her back when picking fruit. Precisely what
problem was diagnosed is not clear, but Harry’s grand-daughter, Nancye
Kopunic (nee Maple) believes it was
tuberculosis of the bone. This would explain why Ethel was hospitalised
for a long period in Adelaide as the disease attacked her bones and cartilage.
Ethel
died in June 1903 and was buried in the Aldinga Wesleyan (now Uniting) Church
cemetery. Harry lived on at Edwardstown, Adelaide and in 1905 married
Catherine Payne by whom he had three further children. In later years the
family moved into the Adelaide Hills and lived at Stirling and Mt Barker. Harry operated a baking business
without great success, and continued a little farming and carting on the side.
Harry retired to Stirling where he died in 1950.
Garnet
Maple took up the trade of french-polishing with the SA Railways. He married
but had no children.
