Charles
Thomas Maple became a blacksmith, probably by being apprenticed to John Coad.
at nearby Salt Creek.
Charles Thomas married Leila Ada Tonkin on 26 Nov 1890. Leila Ada was the sister of Emily Jane
Tonkin who married James Austin Maple. Their niece, Una Olive May Tonkin,
married John Robert Maple, yet another of the Maple brothers.
In 2006 Leila’s nephew, Walter Blundell Maple, recalled that
Charles Thomas was a stout man and a good blacksmith. He was a tall man and some 14 stone.
By around 1910 the family moved to Adelaide. Their first son, Alvin
Ambrose, left South Australia around 1913 and was little heard of again. The
facts seem to be that Alvin became a steward on a coastal ship and eventually
found his way to north Queensland.
Once there he adopted the name of Alfred Allen Malpas, married Catherine
Price, and became something of a bush carpenter in the Queensland outback and
the Northern Territory. His descendants live on in Townsville and the
surrounding areas.
Charles
Thomas died at the early age of 54 years and is buried with his parents in the
West Terrace Cemetery.
