James Austin Maple & Emily Jane Tonkin
James
Austin Maple was the third child and second son of Charles and Elizabeth
Maple. He married Emily Jane
Tonkin (sister of Leila Ada, the wife of Charles Thomas Maple) in 1895 and
farmed at Hay Flat. He was also a shearer and worked on many of the northern
sheep stations.
James
and Emily lived at Hillside for a time and later at Parkfield. Emily was the organist in the local
church (probably the “Little Brickie” Bible Christian chapel at
Parkfield). Their children attended the Parkfield Public School.
James
and Emily eventually left the district to take up farming at Lameroo. Some of
their children lived there and later at Gawler. Emily became a centenarian reaching the
age of 102.
