This
is a record of some of the descendants of Thomas and Elizabeth Maple, their
oldest son, Charles, and of his fourth child, William Henry Maple. The family
represented is but one branch of a large and dispersed Australian family.
Thomas Maple’s family lived east of Canterbury in Kent, England,
the main villages being Kingston, Wingham, Littlebourne, Ickham, Adisham and
Bridge. The family emigrated to South Australia in 1852 and settled at Hay
Flat near Yankalilla on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
While Thomas and Elizabeth have many descendants still living in South
Australia, few now live at Yankalilla. Some have moved to other Australian
states and some founded new lines such as the Maple-Brown family of Goulburn,
NSW, and the Malpas family of North Queensland.
This
short record preserves the story of the early members of the family.
