John Robert Maple & Una Olive Tonkin
John Robert Maple and Una Olive May Tonkin lived at Hillside until
around 1913, and then at Parkfield. Their sons and daughter, Lila, attended
the Parkfield Public School which was situated on their land in the
“Little Brickie”
church that can be seen below.
As at 13 April 2009 Walter
Blundell Maple is likely to be the
oldest of those Maples born at Hay Flat near Yankalilla. He left Adelaide at
the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930’s and became a successful
professional runner in Victoria. During the depression years he co-owned a gold
dredging business in the Castlemaine area that produced some 2,000 ounces of
gold over 10 years. During WW2 he helped to build anti-aircraft guns and later
became a fitter for the Victorian firm of Thompsons.
