After leaving school worked as a bank teller. When WW2 broke out, enlisted in the army and served until discharged in Dec 1945. Was wounded several times and was one of the "Rats of Tobruk". Reached the rank of Captain.

After the war, returned to work on the land. Firstly in partnership with cousins in Yetman, NSW and a few years later acquiring his own properties in Nanango, Queensland. He became very active in primary industry government and amongst the more notable of his appointments were:
President of Queensland Dairymen's Organization (6 years)
Chairman of the Australian Dairy Industry Council and Produce Board (4 years)
Founding Chairman of Queensland Milk board (6 years) until his retirement
He was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 1977 and then in 1983 was awarded in the Queen's Birthday Honours, the Order of Australia, for service to primary industry.

He lived in Brisbane - Fig Tree Pocket
S. visited him in about 1985 when he was unwell with heart valve replacement.
