Communication Impairment (CI)

Teachers: What you need to know

Photo Gallery

Below are some images of communication devices that may be used in the classroom. These devices have been designed for students with severe autism with intellectual disability.

First then next card

First then next card assists the student in comprehending what task is coming up next.

BIGMack switch

Using the BIGmack switch voice messages are recorded on this and the student presses the switch to activate the message. For example, “good morning” greeting is recorded to allow students to greet class members in morning circle each day.

Visual schedule

Visual instructions allow the student to follow simple steps to complete a task analysis, as independently as possible.

Symbols

Symbols located next to activity to allow student to request help when needed, or for the teacher to communicate to student that they are finished or that they need to wait.

Visual schedule

Visual schedules are used for students who need to visualise the structure of the day. Once the student has completed a task they remove the corresponding symbol from the board and place it in the ‘finished’ checkered box.
