Impact of Communication Impairment continued...
Frustration at not being able to express themselves along with ineffective sociocognitive skills may result in students exhibiting difficult behaviour towards other students and staff (Knox & Conti-Ramsden, 2003). Therefore, it is the responsibility of the school and staff to ensure measures are implemented to minimise social, academic and behavioural difficulties. These measures may include the following:
- Educating the student with special needs in the mainstream class with some withdrawal as deemed appropriate
- Organised staff in-service days where strategies for including students with special needs are clearly outlined
- Employment of staff who are experienced in teaching students with special learning needs
- Teachers ensuring that the workload is not too big for students with special learning needs
- Teachers implementing new programs and techniques that serve all students in the classroom
- Educating students without disabilities how to appropriately interact with students with special learning needs
"Children with speech and language problems are more likely than typical developing children to have educational problems associated with their speech and/or language difficulty" (Nathan, Stackhouse, Goulandris & Scowling, 2004). This quote exemplifies the extent of difficulty communication impairment causes. Students may experience difficulties with maths skills due to the relationship between verbal skills and short term memory which is necessary to compute problems such as rote counting (2004).
