Impact of Communication Impairment continued...
Real people, real life.
The impact of communication impairment on herself and society is brilliantly explained by Temple Grandin in her autobiography Thinking in Pictures (1996). The book outlines in detail her experiences of having Autism with communication impairment. An important point Grandin makes is the extreme difficulty to control fear, anxiety and anger. She recounts how she would deal with these emotions in ways such as violent acts like throwing objects and her frustration at not being able to express herself. She highlights how society found her behaviour extraordinary and didn’t really understand the reason behind her behaviours. More of her fascinating journey with Autism can be found at http://www.grandin.com/inc/visual.thinking.html
My Left Foot is another personal account, of Christy Brown. Brown was born with Cerebral Palsy and very limited verbal language. He taught himself to write and paint using the only limb he could control, his left foot. This is an inspirational story which gives the reader and audience an insight into the frustrations of wanting to but not being able to communicate to others effectively.
