Coaching your team

Coaching is a communication process that aids team performance. The effectiveness of your coaching depends on the trust that you have developed with your team. The main focus of coaching is to guide and inspire the team members to improve their performance.
Coaching involves giving the team member opportunities to develop their skills. Give them the levels of information, authority and responsibility suited to their performance level and stretch them where appropriate.
Think about a sporting coach –how do they communicate with their team?
There are five steps to become an effective coach:
- learn to be an effective leader
- identify your goals and communicate them clearly
- actively listen to the team and provide them with the information that they need
- respect and recognize the teams achievements
- encourage learning in the team
You role as a coach is the know each team member, know what motivates them, know what their strengths are and know where they need to improve. It is important to establish trust between you and the team, otherwise the coaching may be wasted. One way of building trust is to ensure that all communications are clearly understood.
Work out what you need to communicate and ensure that you have covered the:
What, who, how, where, why, and when.
Any or all of the following issues may affect the effectiveness of any coaching activity:
- an isolated manager
- not having clear goals
- the learner's need to understand the whole picture
- the coach not being specific
- not securing the team's commitment
- avoiding confrontation by not maintaining performance standards
- not identifying and notifying the team when they have achieved the goals
- impatience from both the manager and the team to succeed
