Before and after the firestorm

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve was a special place in the hearts of many who had worked and visited there prior to 2003.

The forests had not been burnt by hot wildfire for many decades allowing the prevalance of tall widely-spaced mature trees, rich leaf litter and dense fern gullies with clear flowing streams. It was an oasis for bushwalking and wildlife observation when other areas were hot and dry in summer, or frosty and windswept in winter.

The character of the forest was radically changed by the 2003 firestorm.
